Hadacol Tremblers release their first full album “Pills & Powder”

Antwerp, October 2023

Hadacol Tremblers release their first full album “Pills & Powder” on 12” vinyl.

With “Pills & Powder”, Belgian (Antwerp) four-headed combo Hadacol Tremblers brings the “western swing”, a rather unknown chapter of American music history, to life. On their first release, the Hadacol Tremblers recorded two self-written songs and ten songs by well-known and lesser-known heroes from the rich western swing repertoire.

Lead singer Steven Hollanders:  “We picked some amazing songs that are rarely played anymore nowadays. Songs of Bob Wills, for example, the king of western swing who grew up on the Texan cotton plantations where folk fiddle music mixed with blues and swing jazz. We also tackled a few New Orleans classics that were brought by the Texas cowboys in their own unique way. We embraced a repertoire that ranges from rural fiddle music to Mexican traditionals and jazz classics by heroes such as Cole Porter. But all from the perspective of those western swing cowboys from the 1930s-1940s.”

The recordings were made over a period of two years in their own studio “Goattown Records” in Wilrijk (Antwerp).  “We were looking for a sound and live feeling that the musicians brought in the 1930s and 1940s. With authentic instruments from that time (such as guitars, banjo, double bass and fiddle), and by using authentic recording techniques and equipment such as microphones that musicians also had available at that time. The result is very honest, unpolished and unedited. “

The record transpires a tragicomic atmosphere of Honky Tonk bars and buzzy despair, perfectly worded in the accompanying sleeve notes (in Dutch) by well-known Belgian writer, poet and performer Christophe Vekeman. The German graphic artist Marcel Bontempi designed the record graphics in a truly authentic western style.

About Western Swing

Western swing is a musical genre that emerged in Texas in the 1920s when old-time fiddle and rural folk music mixed with Dixieland jazz, blues and swing music. String instruments such as double bass, guitars, violins and banjos were supplemented during the 1930s and 1940s with the first electrically amplified guitars (also hawaiian or lap steel guitar), giving the genre its own distinct sound. After the Second World War, western swing was quickly overshadowed by the rise of rock and roll, which drew direct inspiration from it.

About the band name

The band name refers to the elixir “Hadacol”, a vitamin elixir that was promoted as a medicine by traveling music groups but was especially popular because of its alcohol content.

A few press review quotes

"For delivering sheer fun one would be hard pressed to cite many recent albums any more effective than this release, and it comes from an unusual source. Here you have a vintage-style Western Swing/string band...vocals, fiddle, acoustic guitar, banjo, mando, double bass and lap steel...from Belgium! "
(International Western Music Association, USA))
